Apocalypse Soon

Each year, the Merriam-Webster folks (the ones who publish the real dictionary that's not the OED) come up with their "Words of the Year," based on online lookups (not to be confused, one must suppose, with online hookups).

For 2005 the most-looked-up word was "integrity."

In 2006, following Stephen Colbert, it was "truthiness."

This year it is "w00t ." Yes, indeed, those are two zeros, not two round capital letters. Yes, it's pronounced as if the t was being kept at bay from the w by two of those familiar round letters.

Henry Adams observed that "The progress of evolution from President Washington to President Grant, was alone evidence enough to upset Darwin."

What then of "w00t?"
