That's because the Republicans (and remember, my party has always been the "stupid party") couldn't leave well enough alone, and simply call for an up or down vote on Murtha's own resolution. They insisted on a vote on a differently worded resolution (which they claim made clearer that Murtha just wants to cut and run, leaving the Iraqis to their own devices). That, of course, gave the Demos the opening to vote against the "improved" resolution, and thus claim it DOESN'T represent their position.
The Demos are just being consistent, in any event. It's their plan to leave the Iraqis high and dry, since that's what they did to the Hmong, the Vietnamese, the Iraqi Shia in 1991, the Afghans (last time around), and so on.
